How we move our entire network in one day

How we move our entire network in one day

Saturday morning 10:00 am. For most a weekend, for us today a working day. Arriving at Dataplace Nedzone, we are scheduled to move our entire network, without a single second of downtime. A look behind the scenes!

Today we are moving our entire network to a larger rack to have enough capacity for the future. 4 new (web) servers have already been placed in the new rack and will be put into production next week.

Moving without downtime thanks to High Availability

Because we don't want to have a second of downtime, the old rack is network connected to the new rack. Due to the design of our High Availability cluster, all services are replicated to the new servers in the new rack and are migrated by the cluster at exactly the right time, without customers noticing.

By using a High Availability cluster, services can continue to run even if one of our servers ever fails unexpectedly. In this case, the services on this server are automatically migrated live by the cluster to another 'node'. In this way, we ensure the highest possible uptime.

All servers were moved one by one and removed from the rack. Since the servers are down for a while anyway and all services are running in the background, this is also the ideal time to check and upgrade servers. For example, our existing web servers have been fitted with more RAM. Some VPS nodes have also been upgraded.

Everything in the new rack

Just before 8:00 p.m. all servers are operational in our new rack and everything is carefully documented in our information system. The picture on the right shows (part of) the new rack.

In the coming weeks, the new Web servers will be put into production and the VPS infrastructure will be expanded.
